Jean Dubuffet :: Le Boute en train (gold)

Jean Dubuffet’s best-known works emerged during the cycle entitled L’Hourloupe (hourloupe containing allusions to roaring, hooting and a wolf); the theatrical piece Coucou Bazar (1972–1973) was the climax of that series. L’Hourloupe works originated in loose scribbles that Dubuffet enlarged into graphic forms; Coucou Bazar was performed by actors in costume alongside mobile cut-outsculptures, called ‘practicables’, borrowing the theatrical term for moving elements of scenery.

The more than two metre tall sculpture Le Boute en train (1972) was one of numerous elements employed during the performances; this pendant recreates the playful and dynamic silhouette of the original ‘practicable’.
